The European Commission has adopted an amendment to REACH Annex XVII. This  imposes a restriction on (3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-tridecafluorooctyl) silanetriol and any  mono-, di- and tri-O-(alkyl) derivatives (TDFAs) in spray products. The amendment will go into effect July 1.

According to the regulation, the substance cannot be used in products, such as aerosol dispensers and pump sprays, supplied to the general public after January 2, 2021, in a concentration equal to or greater than two parts per billion by weight of the mixtures containing organic solvents.

Additionally the products must be marked as “for professional users only” and “fatal if inhaled” with a Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals image of GHS06.

TDFA is often combined with organic solvents in:

  • Ceramics (such as kitchen tiles, sanitary ware, wash basins, bath tubs)
  • Certain glasses (automotive glass, float glass coating, glass doors of shower cabins)
  • Enamel
