The European Parliament (EP) of the Circular Economy Package (CEP) gave a formal adoption to APEAL (the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging) on April 18 after more than two years of negotiations. Once the CEP is implemented by 2020 in the Member States, it will benefit the environment, businesses and consumers, said APEAL. The final formal endorsement will occur May 22 and 23 by the Ministers at Council level. The endorsement includes the concept of “multiple recycling” in which products and packaging made from permanent materials, like steel, are kept in the material loop and can be used for other products and packaging. APEAL urges Member States to invest in the necessary infrastructure to meet the recycling targets for packaging materials.
