Update: Multi-purpose lubricant at CARB Meeting

Written on: May 31, 2018 by SprayTM

On May 25, 2018, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Executive Board voted unanimously to adopt the staff proposal on amendments to the Consumer Products dealing with Multi-purpose lubricant category.

The amendments provide an Alternative Option for the Multi-purpose lubricant category.  This Alternative Option is based on the Concept of Reactivity.

This is the first time that Reactivity has been used for a limit on a Consumer Product other than Aerosol Coatings.  This opens the door for the use of Reactivity for other Consumer Products.

The Alternative Option provides for an MIR limit of 0.45 AND a mass VOC limit of 25% VOC for Multi-purpose lubricants.  The effective date of 12/31/2018 has been extended to July 1, 2019.  In addition to using the Alternative Option the product formula needs to be registered with CARB prior to the effective date and yearly reporting of sales is required.

This option provides Multi-purpose lubricant manufacturers and marketers more flexibility in developing compliant product for the Consumer.
