Recycling of steel packaging in Europe has reached a new high of 79.5%, according to the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging (APEAL). APEAL noted this is very close to the industry’s self-imposed target of 80% by 2020. The recycling rate is up 2% from 2015 and steel is Europe’s most recycled packaging material for the twelfth consecutive year, said waste specialist consultant Eunomia.

“It shows that a truly circular economy which reduces waste, saves resources and closes the material loop is well within reach of the EU,” said Alexis Van Maercke, APEAL’s secretary general.

This news follows the launch of APEAL’s Good Practices on Separate collection, Sorting and Recycling of Steel for Packaging report, which was released at the “Steel for Packaging, a Pioneer of Circular Economy” conference in Brussels.
