In response to a critical spike in Dengue Fever in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka South City Corp. (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon distributed mosquito repellant aerosol sprays free of charge to 32 educational institutions in the city.

“The number of patients suffering from Dengue Fever is increasing day by day. As of now [July 2019], over 10,000 dengue patients have been identified,” said Mayor Khokon. “Being the mayor, I am also an inhabitant of this city. I too am worried, as I have a family like all other citizens,” he said after inspecting treatment facilities at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College & Hospital. “Mosquitoes do not differentiate between a mayor or minister. They bite everyone.”
According to the Dhaka Tribune, sales of all types of mosquito repellents—aerosol sprays, coils, lotions, gels and liquid vaporizers—have risen in the capital’s retail shops. Abul Kashem, a shopkeeper in the Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area reported that at the end of July, he was selling 8–10 mosquito repellents a day, up from the 2–3 he was selling at the beginning of July.
Canada’s Global News reported that this is the worst-ever dengue outbreak in Bangladesh, with nearly 10,000 cases in July alone.
