Tubex receives 2021 World Star Award for lightweight aluminum aerosol can

Tubex has again been given a World Star Award from the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) for the Unilever Rexona Recycled Refreshed deodorant aluminum aerosol can.

Highlighting its sustainability, the 2021 award recognizes the can’s patented alloy, which includes 25% real PCR material, and a slight change of shape to make the Rexona Recycled Refreshed 14% lighter than its predecessor. This weight reduction was the result of joint development between Unilever, Tubex and slug supplier Neuman Aluminum.

The can is also only partially (50%) lacquered inside—which saves additional resources—and uses an internal powder coating without volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The overspray of the powder coating is also reused.

“The properties this can displays in terms of sustainability is the result of an over decade long development,” said Leo Werdich, Managing Director of Tubex. “We are very honored that the WPO Jury acknowledged our developments in sustainability in aluminum aerosol can manufacturing. The Tubex team continues to develop sustainable solutions in aerosol can manufacturing, to offer our customers the most sustainable aluminum aerosol can in the world.”

WPO noted the Rexona’s layerwide packaging require 15% less palettes on a truck, 15% less transport and 15% less warehouse space than aerosol cans packaged in bundles.
