The Unión Argentina de Aerosolistas (Union of Argentine Aerosolists or UADA) identified a counterfeit version of an aerosol insect repellent of Korean origin that simulated the popular OFF! brand. UADA immediately notified the authorities of the multinational company that owns the brand, SC Johnson & Son of Argentina, so that the firm could initiate the relevant legal procedures to avoid fraud.
UADA works to ensure that authorities correctly identify aerosol products that enter Argentina from abroad and acts if it can verify that any do not comply with the same regulatory requirements as local producers. Because of trademark piracy in Argentina and other Latin American countries, UADA recommends that all aerosol consumers pay special attention to these “apocryphal products,” make the relevant complaints to government authorities and immediately warn the manufacturers.
UADA noted that counterfeits do not only hurt the brand owner, but the entire aerosol market, as “irregular income affects the pockets of all links in the value chain, since it means fewer manufactured aerosols.” To follow up, UADA recently sent a proposal to the Undersecretary of Industrial Policy concerning complaints of non-compliance with local regulations and the use of raw materials prohibited in Argentina, among other irregularities.
