According to APEAL (the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging), 2013 saw the highest annual rate of steel packaging recycling in Europe to date. Seventy-five percent of steel packaging was recycled across Europe, a 1% increase over 2012’s 74% rate.
Energy and waste consultant Eunomia independently verified the credibility of APEAL’s methods in gathering the data, which confirm steel’s status as the most recycled packaging material in Europe, according to the Association.
Recycling rates have improved for at least 20 consecutive years, with rates more than tripling during that span.
“Steel recycles forever,” said Alexander Mohr, secretary general of APEAL, “with no loss of material quality and is easily recovered from any waste stream thanks to its magnetic properties.”
